At COMEF, our commitment to environmental sustainability is an integral part of our strategic vision.
We know that our activities—primarily the design and construction of waste-to-energy plants—impact the ecological balance. For this reason, we adopt an approach aimed at fossil fuels minimization, to promote sustainable technology development that impacts the environment less and less.
With these goals in mind, we have implemented an Environmental Management System compliant with the UNI EN ISO 14001:2015 standard, which allows us to monitor and improve our environmental performance constantly.
Landfills produce 20% of methane emissions (Cusworth et al., Science, 383(6690), 1499–1504), one of the most harmful greenhouse gases. For this reason, among the objectives set by the EU is to reduce landfill use to less than 10% by 2035. Waste-to-energy recovery will play a key role in all this, and COMEF is doing its part.
We actively contribute to the ecological transition by building thermal energy recovery plants and plants for the production of energy from biomass.
In 2019 alone, the 37 waste-to-energy plants currently operating in Italy processed over 5.5 million tons of waste, producing 4.6 million MWh of electricity and 2.2 million MWh of thermal energy (data from ISPRA). In addition to these are about 3,000 plants for electricity production from biomass, many of which were designed and built by us.
Furthermore, we develop and integrate innovative technologies for the treatment of process fluids and industrial fumes, to reduce the environmental impact of the technical and industrial sector.
For us, sustainability is not just a goal, but a daily responsibility and an opportunity to build a more balanced and efficient future together.
